'SEO package' is one of the vaguest phrases in marketing. Two agencies can both sell a $1,000 per month SEO package and deliver wildly different work. This guide shows exactly what should be inside a real SEO package so you can compare offers and avoid paying for hot air.

Broadly, credible SEO packages include five buckets of work, plus reporting: technical SEO, on-page SEO, content, off-page authority, and local SEO.

    1. Technical SEO

Technical SEO makes sure search engines can crawl, render, and trust your site. A package should cover:

    • Site speed and Core Web Vitals. Slow sites lose rankings and visitors.
    • Mobile usability. Most searches happen on phones.
    • Crawlability and indexing. Sitemaps, robots rules, and fixing pages that should or should not be indexed.
    • Structured data. Schema markup that helps you win rich results.
    • Site architecture. A logical structure and clean internal linking.

    2. On-page SEO

On-page work optimizes individual pages to rank for the terms your customers search:

    • Keyword research and mapping. One primary intent per page.
    • Title tags and meta descriptions. Written to rank and to earn clicks.
    • Headings and content structure. A clear heading hierarchy.
    • Internal linking. Passing authority to your money pages.
    • Image optimization. Alt text and compressed files.

    3. Content

Content is the engine of SEO. A package should include a plan for new pages and articles that target real search demand, like the blog writing and content marketing we produce for clients. Expect anywhere from one to eight pieces a month depending on budget, plus optimization of your existing pages.

Authority is earned largely through other reputable sites linking to yours. Ethical link building (digital PR, guest content, and genuinely useful assets) should be in any serious package. Be wary of anyone selling hundreds of cheap links; those get sites penalized.

    5. Local SEO (if you serve an area)

If customers find you locally, the package should include Google Business Profile optimization, local citations, review strategy, and location pages. We go deep on this in local SEO for small business.

    6. Reporting and communication

You should receive regular reports covering rankings, organic traffic, and, most importantly, leads and conversions. You should also have a human to talk to. If a provider cannot show you progress, you cannot manage the investment.

What is usually not included (and costs extra)

    • Paid ads. A separate discipline and budget.
    • Major website rebuilds. Packages optimize your site; they do not usually rebuild it.
    • Large content volumes. Beyond the plan, extra articles cost extra.
    • Third-party tool fees. Some agencies pass these through.

How to compare SEO packages fairly

    • Ask for specifics. How many articles? How many hours? What links?
    • Match scope to your market. Competitive niches need more content and links.
    • Insist on reporting. No visibility, no deal.
    • Beware guarantees. Nobody can promise a number one ranking.

    Frequently asked questions

How much do SEO packages cost?

Most small business SEO packages run $750 to $3,000 per month. We break the numbers down in how much does SEO cost per month.

Do I need every part of the package?

Not always. A local service business leans on local SEO and content; an e-commerce site leans on technical and content. A good provider tailors the mix to your goals rather than selling a rigid bundle.

Can I buy just an audit?

Yes, and a one-time audit is a smart first step. But rankings are earned through ongoing work, so an audit alone rarely moves the needle for long.
